COMMENTARY | In the world of horror, few characters have left as indelible a mark as Art the Clown from the Terrifier franchise. Portrayed by the talented David Howard Thornton, Art has become a pop culture icon, synonymous with terror and suspense, as well as sass.  But what makes Thornton's performance so exceptional?

The Birth of Art the Clown

Art the Clown first appeared in Damien Leone's short film "The 9th Circle" (2008) and later in the anthology film "All Hallows' Eve" (2013). Initially portrayed by Mike Giannelli, the character was brought to life by Thornton starting with the 2016 feature film "Terrifier"1. Thornton's portrayal has since become the definitive version of Art, captivating audiences with his chilling performance.  He has embodied Art in a way that speaks to the hearts of horror fans across the globe.

The Art of Fear

David Howard Thornton's ability to evoke fear without uttering a single word is nothing short of remarkable. Art the Clown is a character defined by his silence, yet Thornton's expressive face and body language convey a depth of evil and malevolence that is truly terrifying. His mastery of non-verbal communication allows Art to become a haunting presence on screen, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats.

From Cult Classic to Horror Icon

"Terrifier" (2016) was a modestly budgeted film (a seriously low budget of $35,000), but it quickly gained a cult following thanks to Thornton's unforgettable performance. Fans gravitated to his uncanny charm.  The film's success paved the way for "Terrifier 2" (2022) and the recent "Terrifier 3" (2024), both of which have further solidified Art the Clown's place in horror (and Halloween as well as Christmas) history. Thornton's dedication to the role and his ability to bring such a disturbing character to life have earned him critical acclaim and a loyal fan base.[…]

Protein and Liver Health: A Powerful Duo

by Kylie McFerrin

Understanding the Liver-Protein Connection (To Live Long and Prosper)

Your liver, one of the apex organs in your body, works tirelessly to process nutrients, filter toxins, and produce essential substances. When it comes to maintaining optimal liver health, protein plays a crucial role, as opposed to previous studies. This nutrient-rich compound is essential for repairing damaged tissues, supporting immune function, and regulating various bodily processes.

The Impact of Dietary Protein on Liver Health

A well-balanced diet rich in protein can significantly benefit liver health. Studies have shown that adequate protein intake can help:

Reduce Liver Inflammation: Protein-rich foods can help reduce inflammation in the liver, which is often associated with conditions like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Promote Liver Cell Regeneration: Protein provides the building blocks for repairing damaged liver cells. This is particularly important for individuals recovering from liver injuries or diseases.

Support Overall Liver Function: Protein helps maintain the liver's ability to filter toxins and produce essential substances like bile.

Protein and Liver Disease: A Closer Look

Several liver diseases can be influenced by dietary protein intake:

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): Consuming a diet high in protein and low in unhealthy fats can help prevent and manage NAFLD. Protein-rich foods can help reduce inflammation and improve insulin sensitivity, both of which play a role in NAFLD.

Alcoholic Liver Disease: While alcohol consumption is the primary cause of alcoholic liver disease, a protein-rich diet can help mitigate some of the damage. Protein can aid in liver cell repair and reduce inflammation.

Viral Hepatitis: Adequate protein intake is essential for individuals with viral hepatitis, as it supports the immune system and helps the liver recover from infection.

Ageism in the Workplace: A Case Study

by Kylie McFerrin

In the rapidly evolving landscape of today's workforce, diversity and inclusion have become buzzwords that companies strive to embody. However, ageism remains an insidious issue that undermines these efforts. Ageism in the workplace refers to the discriminatory practices and attitudes against individuals or groups based on their age, particularly affecting older employees. This case study delves into the challenges of ageism, explores effective solutions and their implementation, and evaluates the outcomes of these strategies, offering valuable insights for marketers and business owners.

Challenge

Older employees often face stereotypes that label them as resistant to change, less technologically adept, or unable to adapt to new trends. These biases can lead to reduced opportunities, marginalization, and even forced retirements. In our case study, we examine a mid-sized technology firm, TechAdvance Inc., which faced significant challenges related to ageism. Despite having a diverse workforce in terms of gender and ethnicity, the company noticed a pattern of age-related biases affecting productivity and morale.[…]

Senior Citizens and the Embrace of AI and New Technology

by Kylie McFerrin

“In an era where technology continually evolves, senior citizens are increasingly becoming active participants in the digital revolution. Far from being left behind, many older adults are enthusiastically embracing artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies. This adoption is not only enhancing their quality of life but also bridging generational gaps and fostering greater independence.

The Growing Trend of Tech-Savvy Seniors

Gone are the days when technology was solely the domain of younger generations. Today, many seniors are using smartphones, tablets, and computers to stay connected with loved ones, manage their health, and pursue lifelong learning. More and more often, millennials have become completely immune to their grandmother’s texts about her cat. According to a recent survey, more than 70% of seniors are now online, and the numbers are steadily increasing.”[…]

Embracing the essence of freedom

by Kylie McFerrin

Freedom is a concept of paramount importance, yet it often remains underutilized due to self-imposed limitations. Embracing freedom can significantly enhance one’s overall happiness and sense of fulfillment.

Living with Purpose

Pursuing one's purpose is not exclusive to the esoteric. It provides a direct pathway to freedom by allowing individuals to create and live in alignment with their passions and inspirations. Lengthy careers in monotonous roles do not equate to a life of purpose. Reflect on the traditional query, “Are you tired of your nine-to-five?” If the answer is affirmative, consider whether you are genuinely contributing in ways that bring you joy. Identifying your purpose, much like Navin Johnson did in "The Jerk," can lead to profound satisfaction. Whether it’s sewing aprons or assisting family with financial management, engaging in activities that resonate with your core can transform your life. Establishing a vision and plan to move beyond external constraints is essential for achieving abundance and success.

Integrating Freedom into Daily Life

Freedom does not imply making drastic life changes such as quitting your job or abandoning familial responsibilities. Instead, it encourages following your heart within your current context. Introducing new passions or dedicating time to personal interests within your marriage can rejuvenate relationships. Supporting a spouse’s endeavors, like restoring a car, can lead to unexpected and rewarding outcomes. […]

COMMENTARY| The star forward for the Oklahoma City Thunder has gained attention from the media for something other than his on-the-court slam dunks and his off-the-court humanitarian work.  Kevin Durant enjoys smoking the hookah.

The sweetheart of the NBA has been spotted out and about recently at hookah lounges.  It is obvious from his demeanor that he doesn’t mind who catches his actions on film, nor should he.  Durant is one of the highest paid athletes in the world with an Olympic gold medal and three NBA scoring titles under his belt.

Homestate Hero

According to some news outlets, mentioned are how interesting it is for KD to “come into his own” and how he is finally becoming less “personal”.  Durant has always been personal as well as personable, at least as it is recognized by the residents of Oklahoma.  His presence and heartfelt commitment to a state and organization is felt by every Oklahoman.  Kevin kicking back and smoking a hookah isn’t a big deal for even the most conservative of citizens. […]

Russell Westbrook:   MVP?

by Kylie McFerrin

COMMENTARY| Russell Westbrook is known for many things: stylish trendsetter, humanitarian, and gold-medal winner. His personality and fashion sense alone garner wide attention from people across the globe, not to mention his boyish good looks and All-Star appearances. Serious fans know him for his ability to be a “do-it-all ”point guard. The 6’3 player for the OKC Thunder recently underwent a second surgery to repair a loose stitch in the meniscus, an injury that occurred during a grueling playoff game in 2013 after colliding with Houston Rockets point guard Patrick Beverly. Thunder GM Sam Presti didn’t take any chances after the swelling in Westbrook’skneebecame too noticeable to ignore, resulting in a four to six-week break from the court.[…]

Time will tell

[…]Although Westbrook is a point guard who can carry a team, he can also prove to be too tenacious at times. He has received criticism in the past for being a ball hog. The tendency to receive and shoot without considering a pass has irked fans and analysts alike, especially when he overcompensates and misses the basket entirely. Time will tell if Westbrook tweaks his strategy. Miami Heat’s LeBron James and LA Lakers’ Kobe Bryant are both heavy–hitting contenders for MVP for the upcoming season; both have won the award in the recent past. This could be Westbrook’s year, that is, if he concentrates on his weaknesses. He has a heart and is the nucleus of Thunder basketball. His return in mid-December may well see him refreshed and back on the court with a vengeance.[…]

Beyond badass: Aaron Paul

by Kylie McFerrin

Aaron Paul is not only an Emmy-award-winning actor, he is also easy on the eyes.  His portrayal of unique characters in television and movies such as “Veronica Mars”, “National Lampoon’s Van Wilder”, and “Mission Impossible III” has captivated audiences for years.  His stint though, on the popular television show, “Breaking Bad”, has cemented him as an actor worthy of accolades from the press and fans.

Many have only become aware of Paul and his character, Jesse Pinkman, on Breaking Bad.  It may be difficult to differentiate Aaron’s character in Breaking Bad compared to others that he has brought to the screen. Aaron plays the troubled but loyal former student of a high-school teacher turned meth maker, Walter White, who is brilliantly depicted by Bryan Cranston.  The dynamic between the two characters is pure chemistry, pun intended.

Many of us wonder what a favorite actor can do with their acting chops in different scenarios. Let’s look at five shows in which the talented Mr. Paul would excel in a guest-starring role.

Two and a Half Men

Aaron’s ability to play the victim, combined with his comedic timing, would be interesting to see playing off the stars of the show, Ashton Kutcher and Jon Cryer.  Aaron can focus on situations in an uncanny way which would provide a level of depth to the show and its comedy.

Orange is the New Black

A guest role as an angry prison guard would be fitting for Paul.  Creating his character to be reminiscent of Pinkman in Breaking Bad would allow him to insert a bit of tenderness concerning the main character, Piper Chapman, played by the lovely Taylor Schilling.  It’s an extra motive for Paul to exert his good guy/bad guy prowess that we all love so well.[…]

Amy Bates: A Tulsa Leader in the Business of Clean

by Kylie McFerrin

Gathered up by her parents in 1983 and moved to Tulsa from a small town in Minnesota, Redwood Falls to be exact, little did Amy know that her life would take an unpredictable turn.  Her father, a dentist and her mother, an art teacher, bought a Merry Maids franchise upon arriving in Tulsa.

The talk around the dinner table each evening concerning cleaning, clients, and business piqued Amy’s interest and before long, she was hooked.

Before joining her family’s company, Amy worked as a nanny outside of New York City.  “That was a wonderful and interesting experience.”, she said.

Another job which shaped her life was at St. Michael’s Alley.  “I was a hostess when I was 15. I loved it and have great memories of that time. I think I drank so much coffee with a couple of girlfriends that they figured hiring me would get their money right back!”, she remembers fondly.

Her career in eldercare with Service Master furthered her desire to continue in the field of caring for others.

These jobs were integral to Amy’s work ethic, compassion, and why she stands strong with her Merry Maids’ business.

Q and A with Amy:

“How did your Merry Maids business grow?”

“I originally developed the quality control role. We were one of the first offices to create that position. I then moved into sales and marketing.[…]”
